SLC Dental’s Sleep Apnea Mouthguard

A Simple Solution for a Crucial Condition

Causes & Symptoms

Sleep apnea can be caused by various factors, and it often results from a combination of these factors. One of the primary causes is the relaxation of the throat muscles and tongue during sleep, leading to a partial or complete blockage of the airway.

Recognizing the symptoms of sleep apnea is crucial for early diagnosis and an effective treatment. Common symptoms include loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, and abrupt awakenings with choking or gasping for air. Brain fog or moodiness can also be a symptom of the condition.

Diagnosing sleep apnea can involve a sleep study, which can be conducted in a sleep clinic or at home. During the study, various parameters are monitored, including breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and brain activity. SLC Dental can assist you in this endeavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Effective treatment for sleep apnea depends on its severity and the specific type of sleep apnea a person has. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes and positional therapy to medical devices and surgery. Fortunately, most cases do not require drastic measures, but benefit greatly from the Mouthgaurd Solution we carry at SLC Dental.

While some risk factors for sleep apnea, like genetics, cannot be controlled, there are steps individuals can take to reduce their risk. Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and sleeping on one’s side can help lower the likelihood of developing sleep apnea.

Yes, there are different types of sleep apnea, with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA) being the most common. OSA occurs when the throat muscles relax excessively, blocking the airway, while CSA is characterized by the brain failing to signal the muscles to breathe.

Sleep apnea can affect individuals of all ages, including children. However, it is more prevalent in adults and becomes increasingly common with age.

I’d give 10 stars if it were an option, and I highly recommend them to anyone, even those with a fear of the dentist. I had been looking for a new dentist in SLC after moving. I hadn’t found one yet but woke up with a cracked tooth. I called and was able to get an appointment that same day in the afternoon. The staff were friendly, well informed, and professional, and Dr. Allred clearly explained the process involved in fixing my tooth. I needed a bit more dental work than I expected, but Dr. Allred offered an option to take care of it all that same day even though I’m sure he and his staff stayed a bit overtime to make it work. I truly can’t thank them enough for their care, kindness, and willingness to accommodate me.

I found Dr. Allred and Dr. Palmer by referral and all I can say is amazing things. Dr. Palmer and Dr. Allred have been amazing dentists. I’ve been having work done on my teeth for the past year and I wouldn’t of been able to do it if it wasn’t for this dental office. They work so well with you and let you make payment arrangements. I’m so happy to finally have found this dentist. Also all the dental assistants and secretaries are awesome! Thank you so much Dr. Palmer and Dr. Allred.

I went to Dr. Palmer’s office yesterday morning as a new patient. When I arrived, there was an elderly gentleman with a walker in the waiting area. A few minutes later, one of the dental assistants came out to take him back for his cleaning. She greeted him and helped him stand. Then she said, “I have your John Denver all ready for you!” And as they made their way back, it was clear that he was having trouble walking. She said, “Let’s take big steps! Cha Cha steps!” And off he went. Once he was in the back, I heard “Country Roads” start up, and he and the assistant were both singing along. Next up was “Leaving on a Jet Plane”. When I was called back I mentioned it to my assistant, and she said the gentleman has Alzheimer’s and playing and singing John Denver songs helps him remember and relax for his dental services. Oh, my heart! Talk about a practice that truly understands and cares for its patients. Wonderful.
